The state of Utah has standards for each grade level in each subject area that students are expected to achieve by the end of each year. The teachers and staff of Whittier are dedicated to ensuring all students learn the skills that they need to know before moving on to the next grade level. We use these standards as a guideline for every lesson we plan and teach to your children.
Science Goals
1 - Light and Sound:
a. Plan and carry out an investigation to show the cause and effect relationship between sound and vibrating matter
b. Use a model to show the effect of light on objects
c. Plan and carry out an investigation to determine the effect of materials in the path of a beam of light
d. Design a device in which the structure of the device uses light or sound to solve the problem of communicating over a distance
2 - Seasons and Space Patterns:
a. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the movement of the Sun, Moon, and stars to describe predictable patterns
b. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the patterns observed at different times of the year to relate the amount of daylight to the time of year
c. Design a device that measures the varying patterns of daylight
3 - The Needs of Living Things and Their Offspring:
a. Plan and carry out an investigation to determine the effect of sunlight and water on plant growth
b. Construct an explanation by observing patterns of external features of living things that survive in different locations
c. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the patterns of plants and nonhuman animals that are alike, but not exactly like, their parents
d. Construct an explanation of the patterns in the behaviors of parents and offspring which help offspring to survive

Social Studies
Social Studies is an extremely important subject for first graders. We spend a lot of time talking about the world around us and how we can interact with it in a positive way. We learn how to keep our bodies safe, how to be kind and get along with people around us, what goes on in our communities, and information about our city, state, country, continent, and world.
Social Studies Goals
1 - Describe and demonstrate appropriate social skills necessary for working in a group
Identify and list responsibilities in the school and in the neighborhood
2 - Recognize and describe examples of differences within school and the neighborhood
Recognize and identify the people and their roles in the school and neighborhood; explain how these roles change over time
3 - Name school, neighborhood, Utah state, and national symbols, landmarks, and documents
Identify and use geographic terms and tools
Recognize and use a map or a globe
4 - Explain how goods and services meet people's needs
Recognize that people need to make choices to meet their needs
